Today central government release taxation data of central
government of India. I am capturing some interesting part of it. I am
interested in current years data:
Year - 2015-16
Corporate Tax: 454419 crore
Personal Income Tax: 286801 crore
Other Direct taxes: 1075 crore
Direct Tax collection: 742295 crore
Indirect Tax collection: 711885 crore
Total Tax collection: 1454180 crore
GDP - 13567192 crore
Population of India: 125 crore
Average per person income per year: 1,08,537 rupee
Individual income tax assesses: 4.86 crore
The interesting
part is that out of Total tax collection of 14,54,180 crore only 2,86,801 crore
comes as personal income tax which is 19.72 % of total tax collected. Number of
individual tax payers is 4.86 crore which is 3.88% of total population. If I
assume that every earning individual have 3 dependents then 15.55% of families
are paying personal income tax.
If we assume that
only 25% of our population is earning then average income per earning person
is 4,34,148 (per family of 4 person). As per current income
tax slab tax on income of 5 lakhs is 25,000. The average tax per income tax
payer is 59,012 rupee which looks reasonable.
7,11,885 crore
rupee is coming as indirect taxes which is being paid by every individuals
irrespective of their financial status. Excise duty on medicines is paid by
every patient be him rich or poor. It is 48.95% of total tax collection. If
19.72% of tax is paid by 15.55% of families as income tax then it is not
surprising.
